Deadly snakes have very toxic venom but are not necessarily a major concern due to low levels of contact with humans or antitoxins are available and effective. The Dangerous snakes are the ones that have frequent contact with humans and are responsible for most injuries and deaths.

Snake Country Precautions

  • Wear proper footgear, particularly at night. Wear heavy fabric long pants if possible
  • Walk carefully and watch your step. Step onto logs rather than over them before looking and moving on. Use sticks to turn logs and rocks.
  • Look closely when picking fruit or moving around water.
  • Carefully check bedding, shelter and clothing.
  • Avoid snakes! Some snakes, such as Mambas, Cobras , and Bushmasters , will attack aggressively when cornered.
  • Snakes will seek out food sources such as rats, mice, fish, frogs and birds. If your home has a food source in the crawl space, attic, basement, woodpile or water areas then you might have snakes. It's not a good idea to have bird feeders, water ponds, or other invitations on your property.
  • Travelers to Snake County should be cautious sitting around the garden or pool at night.
  • Not all snake bits are fatal but emergency medical help should be sought immediate.
  • The affected limb should be immobilized with a splint, and Paracetamol can be used as a painkiller. Do not use Aspirin!
  • If the snake bit is from a venomous snake, with a dangerous Neurotoxic, is a tight tourniquet needed.

Take extra precautions when traveling with infants, toddlers or children! Antivenoms are very effective but the venom of one bite from many poisons snakes could have sever consequence even if antivenom is administered quickly.
